Jaron Lanier - Fixing The Internet

If you’re at all interested in understanding the true magnitude of social media and online advertisement’s manipulative grip on you is, then you should listen to and read everything that Jaron Lanier puts out. He himself is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, being part of the first steps in Virtual Reality, selling a company to Google and generally seeing everything from the inside. So, he’s right in the thick of it.

In this video he sums up his idea of how the tables can be turned for all of us. He suggests that instead of giving our data for free to giant tech companies - who then use it to manipulate our online behaviour in the direction of buying something - that we should be paid small amounts for it. The second part of the idea is that we should also pay for servives such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

As he says, the trillion dollar economy of tech giants rely on our data to make their money. We give that data to them for free and basically receive nothing in return except a totally chaotic and dark world full of manipulation, deceit, fake news, fake accounts and an actual decrease in social connectedness.
