As Yongey Mingyur Rinaponche explains, the foundation of meditation is awareness. Awareness is like space. It’s always there and you are always aware. Even if you’re aware of not being aware. The storm moves into space and then disolves back into space, but the space never goes anywhere. It’s always there.
It’s being able to connect with this space (awareness) and maintain the connection that gives way to meditation.
The talk goes through his story of discovering meditation and how it gave way to relieving him of panic attacks. He then leads a practical session where explanation of basic sensation based meditation is given. Throughout the talk there are some really great metaphores and ways of thinking provided that help clear up a bit of the mysticism of meditation. There’s also a Q&A at the end, which covers some good questions.
